My Daughter Wants to Be a Jay-Z Fan…Now?

It started with a random text message that read:

“Hi! What are y’all favorite Jay Z songs lol? I wanna be a fan.”

Followed by two laughing emojis.

The sender was my 27-year-old daughter. The receivers were me and my 36-year-old daughter.

I was flabbergasted!

My response was simply:

“WHAT?!!!!!!!!”

Then along with several crying emojis, I texted:

“you just now wanna become a fan of Jay’s”?!!!!

Understanding the assignment, while I still lay in dismay, my oldest commenced to create a playlist.

To which I replied:

“get your little sista right.”

Then I pondered the question to myself,

“why is she so interested in becoming a fan of Hov now”?

Then it dawned on me,

“she’s tryna get ready for the concert.”

You see, both of my daughters are professional concert goers.

A popular ticket of their favorite acts within the United States doesn’t stand a chance. No cost is off limits. And they do meet and greets as easy as I rub my feet and eat.

(I don’t know what that means. I just thought it sounded cool because it rhymed)

But y’all get the point.

So, I did a little more digging.

I said,

“hmmmmmm may I ask, why do you wanna be part of the conversation now”?

To which my youngest replied,

“because people are excited about his concert this summer. Lol. That’s what inspired this.”

“I knew it”!

I asked,

“are y’all going”?

Then I pleaded,

“take me, pllllleeeeeeaaaaasssee.”

The elder of the two did an excellent job putting together a twenty-six-song playlist.

One hour and 49 minutes of unadulterated Jay-Z.

She has an excellent ear for music. The curated discography compiles all his earlier music. It starts with Can’t Knock the Hustle and ends with Allure.

I’m listening to the music as if it’s my first time hearing these gems.

My daughter has one week to be converted into a Jay Z fan.

One week only.

Then we’re going to talk about finding some tickets to go see him in person.

I’m excited that my baby is about to go on this voyage.

Because becoming a fan of Hov ain’t just about the music…

it’s about understanding the era that raised me.

I’ll let y’all know if she converts or not.
