She Said “Yes”!
It all started ten days ago with an inconspicuous text message.
The message read:
“Hi! What are y’all favorite Jay-Z songs lol? I wanna be a fan.”
The sender was my youngest daughter.
The recipients were me and her sister.
Immediately, big sis understood the assignment and responded accordingly.
I, however, was somewhat in my feelings… as if I’d dropped the Hip Hop ball (pause) somewhere.
Now, after some prodding…
a 26-song, one hour and 49-second playlist of Hov,
52 group text messages,
and a published editorial written by me entitled “My Daughter Wants to Be a Jay-Z Fan…Now?”—
When asked:
“sooooo, are you a fan or naw?”
She responded with a resounding:
“yes.”
But more importantly than her becoming a Jay-Z fan was the process—the exchanged communication about Hip Hop between me and my girls, all prompted by a simple inquiry.
She finally finished making her way through the playlist yesterday.
Surprisingly, the song that she was most excited about was “Anything” featuring Usher and Pharrell Williams.
She excitedly shared:
“I’ve never heard this song.”
She then went on to leave an audio message…
(that I didn’t listen to—I read it):
“my favorite songs are on Volume 2: Hard Knock Life and Blueprint.
I think I liked Blueprint the best because it had really good production and I like the vibe of the songs.
But WOW, what a storyteller. I think I like the storytelling the most.
Reasonable Doubt, I don’t know. I don’t think it’s for me.
I think it was a little too like old school drug dealer music.”
I wasn’t mad about her synthesis of his music at all.
My oldest daughter then asked:
“what about the Black Album?”
She followed that up with:
“that album raised me.”
Unbeknownst to me and her mom… obviously. Lol.
Her little sister quickly responded:
“not my fav. But I liked it. Lol. It felt like a retirement.”
Which is exactly what Hov intended for it to be.
We finished our exploration—which started 240 hours earlier—with my daughter texting:
“Yes, I am a fan. I like his vibe. Lol.”
To which I gave a heart emoji.
And big sis gave an exclamation.
Mission accomplished.
