Proverbs 18:22 by Cornell Dews

Proverbs 18:22 says, “whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.”

Approximately 24 years ago, my wife said, “we need to start going to church.”  My response, “that’s cool, I’m not doing much on Sunday’s.”  Her response to me, “that’s the most ignorant thing I’ve ever heard you say.”  She continued, “we need to introduce our children to the LORD.”  I concurred.  She had a church in mind.  That Sunday, we dressed, and as a family, were off to worship.  I did not have a pleasant experience in church that day.  The following Sunday as my wife dressed and prepared to leave for church, I remained in my lounge attire, seated on my futon watching television.  Kim asked, “why aren’t you dressed”?  I said, “I’m not going.”  She left the room. When she returned, she was wearing her lounge attire and sat next to me.  When I asked, “why aren’t you leaving”?  She said, “I’m not going if you’re not going.”

In 2001, I found a church for us to attend.  That church is Huber Memorial Church in Baltimore, led by Pastor Servant P.M. Smith.  And by the grace of GOD, not only did we find a church, but we also found a home, we found a family.  Together we’ve grown exponentially in our faith.  We’ve survived trials & tribulations that only GOD could’ve pulled us through.  We pray together.  We worship together.  And we serve GOD’s people together.  Prayerfully our walk encourages others to accept JESUS CHRIST as their LORD and SAVIOR.  Prayerfully our walk encourages others to seek a personal relationship with the LORD.

Life has a funny way of teaching you necessary lessons.  Initially I was adamant about not going to church.  But as a man, my Pastor once posed this question to me, “what kind of man leads his family by sending his wife and children to church alone”?  As much as I wanted to rebut his inquiry, I didn’t have a good one.  In actuality, the only proper rebuttal is to be present, at church, with my wife and children, leading my family.

It took some time, and a few bumps and bruises for me to grow into the GOD-fearing man and leader I am today.  But by the grace and patience of GOD, I am thankful that HE has his hands on me.  Today, I don’t send my wife to church alone.  As a matter of fact, today, we actively serve together.  To GOD Be The Glory.  Thank you JESUS!  Thank you FATHER!  Thank you HOLY SPIRIT!
