My grandmother once told me,
“you’re gonna eat sh!t before you die.”
When she said that I was like, “damn.”
To myself, of course.
I was only 10 years old. I didn’t know the difference between a person speaking literally or figuratively.
I only knew one of the two. And the one I knew, the thought of what she said didn’t leave a good taste in my mouth.
However, at 50 plus years of living, I understand exactly what she meant. She was speaking about being humbled in life. She was speaking about not always being able to get what you want. She was speaking about appreciating what you have.
My grandmother words didn’t readily resonate with me as a child. But as I got older, had my own family, had to provide for myself and others, had setbacks, took some lumps and bruises.
Oh, I understand what grandma meant.
You’re gonna eat sh!t before you die.
Life has a way of humbling those of us who need to be humbled.
Nowadays, the manner and words in which my old country grandmother from Tappahannock Virginia, born in 1908 chose to chastise me would be considered harsh and politically incorrect. But it wasn’t. And it’s not.
Some sh!t is just necessary.
